FAQ’s

Commonly asked questions regarding CBD.

 What does CBD stand for?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol. This is the main active ingredient in the PHC formulations. CBD is a non-psychoactive molecule found in all forms of cannabis, hemp, and marijuana.

What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are a classification of molecules that interact with the endocannabinoid system. There are many different cannabinoids, some are psychoactive, most are not. Examples of cannabinoids are THC, CBD, CBG, CBN. Cannabinoids fall into two categories, endogenous cannabinoids and phytocannabinoids. Endogenous cannabinoids are inherent in the body and phytocannabinoids are supplied by plants such as hemp and marijuana.

What are terpenes and why are they important?

Terpenes are essential oils that are found in the cannabis family of plants as well as other plants, fruits, and other sources. There are hundreds of various terpenes which all provide their own aroma, taste and functionality. Terpenes can be used in conjunction with the molecule to diversify how the body experiences the molecule. Terpenes play a major role in the entourage effect. They are responsible for the diversity of the molecule applied. For example, we may add linalool to a formulation to add a balancing effect regarding mood. CBD would be beneficial by itself, but the addition of linalool would make this situation more beneficial towards the targeted outcome.

Does CBD get you high like THC?

CBD is a non-psychoactive Cannabinoid. As long as your CBD product has no THC in it, you will feel no classical high with these products. Even with a .3% legal amount of THC, it is considered to be non-psychoactive. Products with terpenes are more likely to have various feelings associated with them but

they still are not a THC high.

Can I fail a drug test if I only use CBD?

It is important for people to understand that there are many variables that can lead to a positive drug test even if THC is not present in the products. Some of these examples are acidification, improper storage, drug test methodology, certain levels and methods of application. There are many things that can be done to make this unlikely situation less likely, but we have a responsibility as sellers of these products to inform people of the potential concerns of applying items. Some ways to mitigate THC concerns include, using zero THC formulations, using topicals only, storing products in stable temperatures away from sunlight.

Can I legally obtain this where I live, if so, how?

Now that the farm bill has passed, hemp is legal across the U.S. at a Federal level. Upwards of 30 states have legislation in place to support hemp industries. As of now, we do ship all over the U.S and to various nations around the world. As the FDA begins to take control of the industry, we expect changes which will force us to adjust and comply.

What is the Endo-Cannabinoid system (ECS)?

The Endo-Cannabinoid System is a network of receptors and neurotransmitters that act as a support system for all the major systems in the body. This includes, sleep, appetite, pain response, inflammation responses, mental homeostasis and much more. Currently we know about 2 receptors in the system, CB1 & CB2. These receptors are located all over the body and the activation of the ECS through cannabinoids leads to many of the beneficial responses that are being documented currently.

What are Phyto-cannabinoids and how are they up taken by the body?

Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids that occur naturally in the cannabis plant. The classical cannabinoids are formed through decarboxylation of their respective 2-carboxylic acids (2-COOH), a process which is started off by heat, light or alkaline conditions. Specific cannabinoids stimulate the receptors in the Endo-Cannabinoid system and then are distributed throughout the body.

Can I overdose CBD? What is an appropriate dosage?

The appropriate serving is a personal target and should be reached through discussion, application and oversight. The applications that make a positive impact range greatly from customer to customer. It is important to have a strong dialogue with buyers to understand their situation and how the products impact them as they begin to test products. You can check our dosage calculator for recommended dosage.

Are there side effects I should be aware of when using CBD?

CBD oil, in all its forms are generally well tolerated even at application levels above 1,500mg a day. Side effects, if any, are cannabis type side effects. Minor headaches, dry mouth, dream influence are rare but have been documented. These typically show up for short periods of time with users who are not used to cannabis products.

Will CBD interact with other medications that I currently use?

Studies show that CBD can impact the P-450 enzyme system. The P-450 enzyme system aides the body in metabolizing medications. This metabolizing can be impacted by the presence of CBD. Some medications can be metabolized faster or slower than they would be on their own. More research is being conducted to better understand the impact of CBD and this question. It is important to advise buyers to consult with their doctors when taking CBD in conjunction with pharmaceutical medications.

What is the difference between full spectrum and isolated CBD? Which is better?

Full spectrum CBD refers to an extract that is created from the hemp plant that contains an array of various cannabinoids, including THC, as well as an array of terpenes which are essential oils that are  found in cannabis plants. Full spectrum products have more beneficial components from the hemp plant than any cannabinoid by itself, this is called the entourage effect.

Some choose not to or cannot access THC, so we formulate products with a CBD isolate. This concentrate is a refined product off the “crude” initial processing from the plant. In the end, the CBD molecule is “isolated” away from the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and any plant matter. This is done through distillation. CBD isolate has its various benefits but PHC believes that keeping the oil as close to its native expression of cannabinoids is ideal for those who choose to access these items.

What is the most efficient means of ingesting CBD?

In a study conducted by Hollister Et Al, the optimal means of ingestion when considering bio-availability is to inhale or apply sublingually. However, there isn’t a universal remedy where one form of the finished product is more effective than the other. The circumstances of the user often guide providers to specific applications for specific circumstances.

Who are some of the lead organizations that are leading research about health and CBD?

Israel is the epicenter of the modern understanding of CBD. Israel’s place in the CBD science world was started by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam. He is an Israeli scientist that began research using confiscated Lebanese hash in the 1960’s. He was one of the first scientists to discover CBD. He later established a medical cannabis program through the Ministry of Health which has led to formal cannabis program that currently treats over 25,000 patients in the nation.

Should I be concerned about foreign sources of CBD?

Concern is not the word I would use when talking about CBD that is produced abroad. Caution would be more appropriate. Just like any product that you would consume, it is best to understand how it is grown, processed, and handled. Some foreign sources of CBD may not undergo the same scrutiny or regulations. We recommend that people take the personal responsibility to understand where the CBD in their products originate. Magnolia Medicinals uses no foreign hemp. All our hemp is sourced from USDA certified hemp providers from the state of TN and MS.

How are the oils extracted from the plant? How would CBD and THC be separated if THC was found in CBD products?

CBD oils can be extracted away from the plant using various methods. Since CBD is therapeutic in nature, many of the extraction methods used avoid hydrocarbons that are commonly used in the THC world.

Often CBD is extracted via ethanol or even more commonly CO2. In situations where the source plant may have a “hot” level of THC, distillation can be used to completely isolate the CBD from any other substances that aren’t desirable.

Do I need a MMJ card or prescription in Mississippi in order to purchase CBD?

No! In most places, people can buy CBD products in the same way as any traditional product on the shelves now. There is no need to have a special credential to have access to the products. We highly recommend sourcing your products from a location that can educate you about their products like Magnolia Medicinals.

Is CBD safe for my child? What about my pets?

CBD is safe for child consumption. All mammals have the endo-cannabinoid system. Most of the emergence of CBD into the American theatre has been created from the stories of young children who came to Colorado to gain access to these molecules. The most known example is Charlotte Figi, who had her epileptic seizures reduced greatly through the administration of CBD oil.
